How to Create a New World

News + New Good Things from Tia Norman

He told me; I'm not an extension of my small town life or any limiting circumstances – I was a 'new light' given to the planet and it was up to me how I wanted to participate, who I was, wanted to become, and believe – I was made of starlight…

Peaceful, Centered + Connected

One Friday night in 2017 as my son ran football drills under a solitary light on a field in our neighborhood my daughter and I sat in the bleachers under the stars. She was six years old at the time. She said things that seemed both innocent enough for her age and also wise beyond her years.

As the conversation progressed I had the sense to hit record on my phone's voice memo. I return to the memo from time to time. When I listen to her words I always discover a piece of wisdom that seems to be exactly what my heart needs. At a time when I was just beginning to experiment with leading contemplative practices, she stepped in as a wise guide. She was a little mystic in my midst illuminating what I was learning about the spiritual journey and reading scripture through a lens of expanding human consciousness.

She was reminding me that at any moment I could choose to participate in creating a new world.

I share the 10 minute conversation with you here as an invitation to engage in the practice of sacred listening. Consider hitting play as you enjoy a cup of tea this morning or as you find yourself maneuvering about the tasks required of each moment today.

You may notice her use of the words "new good things." Yes, this is the conversation that I honor in calling my newsletter News and New Good Things. It's a simple way to share the spirit behind why I sit down, write, and send this offering with the hope that it may stir something in you as we all contribute to the continuous unfolding of creation.

Right here.

Right now.

At this moment.

There is space. There is space. There is space.

Move in.

This segment of my newsletter is currently focused on presenting one aspect that emerged within the Western model of Christian spiritual understanding and offers it in conjunction with the model that is closer to what Jesus taught, and even if Jesus isn't your wisdom teacher of choice I believe you will find these perspectives are an echo of universal truths that resonate somewhere in the chambers of your heart. Perhaps they will invite you to pause and revisit how spiritual truths have been presented to you.

Western Attitude

Emphasis is on reward in this life and heaven rather than being concerned about loving God and being united to God here and now. This manifests itself as external works and earning merits.

Scriptural Model

The journey is to unite oursevles and love God in the here and now when it comes to loving and serving others.

We'll unpack two more aspects of these models on December 1st.

A New Way to See the Good News

A new way to see the Good News offers a short passage that may offer a fresh perspective or insight into the ancient collection of poems, letters, and stories known as the Bible.

And God said, "Let there be light," and there was light.

- Genesis 1:3

The genius and poetic beauty of the creation story is that it helps to communicate how each day of creation has a corresponding day of fulfillment. The light of Day 1 is completed on the fourth day with the sun, moon, and stars. The skies and waters of Day 2 are completed on Day 5 with birds and fish. The land and vegetation of Day 3 are rounded out on Day 6 with the animals first and then human beings.

Day 7 is often touted, and rightfully so, as the day God rested. Notice how the poet does two subtle things here; implies creation is not complete without rest and leaves Day 7 unfulfilled. This implies perhaps that we are living in Day 7 now...

Until next time.

Tia

News + New Good Things from Tia Norman The deepest level of communication is not communication, but communion. It is wordless. It is beyond words. It is beyond speech. It is beyond concept. Not that we discover a new unity, but we discover an old unity. My dear brothers and sisters, we are already one. But we imagine we are not. And what we have to recover is our original unity. What we have to be, is what we are. -Thomas Merton Peaceful, Centered + Connected When global confusion rises I...

News + New Good Things from Tia Norman "Sometimes silence is not an absence of sound but rather a presence of understanding." - Richard Wagamese Peaceful, Centered + Connected I listened to the eclipse as closely as I watched it. I made good on a promise to my daughter that April 8th would be our eclipse party day. She stayed home from school and was in charge of snacks. The spread included dragonfruit and pomegranate because both seem mysterious and require scientific research to slice and...

News + New Good Things from Tia Norman “When your needs are met, your soul sings.” -Oprah Winfrey Peaceful, Centered + Connected Somewhere along the way, I began denying my own needs and suffocating my voice to meet the limitations of others. This is the space where I am being stretched the most right now. What I am learning is that over time this moves one into an energy of depletion creating a center of desertion of our needs by refusing to recognize them out of fear. In the fear and...
