A new way to see the Good News is a short passage that may offer a fresh perspective or insight into the ancient collection of poems, letters, and stories known as the Bible. This section is currently dedicated to exploring identity.
"The tempter came to him and said, "If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread." Jesus answered...
- Matthew 4:3
This is the path. A voice arises, tempts us, and requests proof of who we have been created to be. The beauty in these lines, and in the ones that follow, is that we can place ourselves in the story. The ancient echo of the "If you are..." found in Matthew is often the equivalent to the "Who do you think you are?" of the modern day.
The loudest voice within.
Richard Rohr says, "Worship of Jesus is rather harmless and risk-free; following Jesus would change everything." How do we follow Jesus and his teachings around identity? What does the repeated questioning of his identity teach us about our own?
The issue I've discovered is that the path is not always so easy to see in the Western world. We are often taught that we will be tempted and the tools that connect those temptations to a false sense of identity and create the spaciousness awareness that allows us to stay firmly planted in the essence of who we are, our true self, are simply not widely available.
The temptation to turn stones into bread correlates to our over-identification with the need for security and survival. This isn't to say that we shouldn't feel the need for these things. That version of me, pictured above, headed off to kindergarten needed the food in her Pink Panther lunchbox - it is saying our need for these things is not who we are and therein lies the difference.
We'll look at the additional temptations in the weeks ahead and see how they all connect to the ego. I am also unpacking this in-depth in week 5 of my upcoming course if you'd like to take a deeper dive in a live class.
Until next time.

News + New Good Things from Tia Norman The deepest level of communication is not communication, but communion. It is wordless. It is beyond words. It is beyond speech. It is beyond concept. Not that we discover a new unity, but we discover an old unity. My dear brothers and sisters, we are already one. But we imagine we are not. And what we have to recover is our original unity. What we have to be, is what we are. -Thomas Merton Peaceful, Centered + Connected When global confusion rises I...
News + New Good Things from Tia Norman "Sometimes silence is not an absence of sound but rather a presence of understanding." - Richard Wagamese Peaceful, Centered + Connected I listened to the eclipse as closely as I watched it. I made good on a promise to my daughter that April 8th would be our eclipse party day. She stayed home from school and was in charge of snacks. The spread included dragonfruit and pomegranate because both seem mysterious and require scientific research to slice and...
News + New Good Things from Tia Norman “When your needs are met, your soul sings.” -Oprah Winfrey Peaceful, Centered + Connected Somewhere along the way, I began denying my own needs and suffocating my voice to meet the limitations of others. This is the space where I am being stretched the most right now. What I am learning is that over time this moves one into an energy of depletion creating a center of desertion of our needs by refusing to recognize them out of fear. In the fear and...
